Today is Labor Day. While many of us are enjoying spending time with our families and our friends and rejoicing in having a day off from work, it has me thinking about our work lives.
We all need money; we all need to earnestly earn it. We stay on our jobs because we have mouths to feed, mortgage and rent to pay, lights and heat to keep on. We work to keep ourselves and our families safe and healthy. Those who call the shots and have the power to cut the checks know the challenges that we all face but oftentimes we are treated as if we are merely expendable. As if we are one in a rotation of individuals who circle in and out of our particular positions. This can be a tough pill to swallow.
More so, some of us have colleagues who feel as if it is part of their job responsibilities to rip us and fellow colleagues apart with their tongues, even though they have no knowledge about our personal life and have never walked in our shoes.
I believe that despite how we have been trained by society and how we are being treated in our work environments, being kind, being slow to argue, and refraining from delivering sharp retorts does not mean that you are docile or a rug to be walked over! In fact, having the strength to stand strong, stand quiet, and evaluate the situation for what it really is — that is where power lies. Quiet Power, Peaceful Confidence is not an easy stance to take, but with patience, practice, and perseverance, we can all work towards becoming our best selves.
Make a commitment to return to work this week with a refreshed and balanced head on your shoulders and the strength to stand above the gossip, above the petty arguments. This week, focus on doing your work the best you can. Help your colleagues in a positive, calm, and efficient manner. Support your bosses and embrace the point of view that you are working with them for a common cause.
We all must walk through the fire from time to time, are you strong enough to walk to the other side?
